In the early seventies I liked to hitchhike for fun – Coming back from California I would take the southern route, and spend time with an old prospector named Scottie Morris who had a trailer right down on the Rio Grande in Big Bend country east of Redford.
I would sleep outside – On several occasions I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of steady drum beats from the desert canyon in the north – a consistent continuous powerful sound that didn’t seem to stop – I tried to stay awake but dropped back into sleep.
I included this in a poem about my end – this poem seemed to be the perfect introduction to WINTER MOON.
In the room where I sleep, l have a picture window facing due west – In the late winter of 2007 I woke up one night with a jolt – I thought the cops had come – It seemed like there was a helicopter with a giant search light shining in on me.
After a quick startle, I realized it was a huge full moon just about to set behind the trees to the west – and I found myself saying a prayer for my mother – it had only been nine years – and then the song started coming out – as well as the tag line – I went over the song in my mind until I had memorized it – and then went back to sleep.
BayleyKate had a sticker on her guitar case that said “Peace Through Music” - and I had told her that I was going to work it into a song – the next time I went to Lane I played the song for the family in the hunting lodge.
